Righteousness Leads to Persecution

Matthew 5:11–12

The Beatitudes describe the qualities that God blesses in Christians, including humility, righteousness, and peacemaking. These are the essentials to a Christian’s character and a sign we are changed inwardly causing us to be persecuted wherever we go.

“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you,” (Matthew 5:11–12 NASB).

It is important to understand that the world will not persecute us because of our selflessness or noble character. In fact, these qualities are often admired by the world. Instead, Christians face persecution because of our commitment to righteousness and our love for Christ.

It is this love that sets us apart and may be viewed as extreme or fanatical by those who do not understand or accept it. Remember that Jesus was not killed because of his miracles, but because of his unwavering love for God’s law. It is this same love that can lead us to face persecution as we strive to live out our faith.

Suffering for the sake of Christ is a badge of honor. Though the world may revile us, Jesus teaches us how to respond with grace and love. He does not encourage retaliation or holding onto resentment or bitterness. Instead, he tells us to see persecution for what it is: a sign of our genuine faith.

Just like the true prophets who came before us, suffering can be proof that we do not belong to the world, but to Christ. It is a reminder that we are bound for heaven and called to live out our faith with courage and conviction.

Persecution is a blessing that makes a Christian exceedingly glad. Instead of discouragement we are to rejoice knowing the reward of heaven is great. Remember to respond to persecution with love and grace since it is a sign of our genuine faith.
