The Harsh Reality: We Have No Claims on God

Do you ever feel like life is unfair? Like you’ve been dealt a bad hand and you’re just trying to make the best of it? Job certainly did. He was a man who had it all, but in a moment, he lost everything — his family, his wealth, his health, and even his status.

The devil said it was because Job only served God because he was bribed, but Job insisted that he served God because of the work that God had done in his life.

When Bildad came along with his philosophy that Job was suffering because of his sin, Job pleaded for a fair trial with God. But how could he, a mere mortal, ever get a fair hearing in a trial with the Almighty? Man and God are unequally matched, even if Job is the most righteous of all humans.

“In truth I know that this is so; But how can a person be in the right with God? If one wished to dispute with Him, He could not answer Him once in a thousand times. Wise in heart and mighty in strength, Who has defied Him without harm?” (Job 9:1–4).”

So what’s the solution? Job hints at a mediator — someone who is both God and man that can bring justice to this case. But until Jesus Christ came as the ultimate mediator, we were all in the same boat as Job. We had no claims on God and no way to make things right on our own.

Here’s the truth: God has no obligations to his creatures. He is not bound to do anything at all for you and me. But even though we have no claims on God, He is a covenant God who gives us undeserved Grace. He is above his creation, and we must recognize that fact in order to truly understand our place in the world.

If you’re feeling lost or hopeless today, like Job did, remember that the road to salvation is clear. You must repent and put your faith in the ultimate mediator, Jesus Christ. He is the only way to bridge the gap between God and man and bring us the justice we so desperately need.
