The Missing Fear of God

Romans 1:21,28

Have you ever wondered why humanity seems to be trapped in a perpetual state of sin? It’s a question that has plagued us for centuries.

The apostle Paul sheds some light on this matter in his letter to the Romans. He explains that our sinful nature is not only deliberate but also inexcusable. Despite knowing God, we fail to honor Him and express gratitude for all that we have received from Him.

In Romans 1:21,28, Paul writes, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened… And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper.”

We’re all guilty of this offense. We tend to construct our lives around personal comfort, our homes, and the pursuit of pleasure. We indulge in the pleasures of the world without offering the gratitude that is due to God.

The root cause of this unrestrained sinfulness, according to Paul, is the absence of fear and reverence for God. Humanity refuses to glorify Him as God, which echoes the original sin of Adam and Eve. They failed to recognize God’s rightful authority and mastery over them. Tragically, this pattern has repeated itself in every individual’s life since then.

However, there is one exception to this narrative — the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. Many people today claim to follow Christianity, but it seems that modern Christianity has strayed from its true essence, becoming a religion of human invention.

Outside of Christ, everything is folly. Let’s not forget that Christ lived a perfect life, free from the sins that we all commit, as He submitted Himself completely to the will of the Father. He alone is truly worthy.

So, how can we break free from this cycle of sin and ungratefulness? The answer lies in recognizing and acknowledging God as the sovereign Lord of our lives. It’s about humbly accepting our position as His creation and expressing genuine gratitude for all that He has bestowed upon us. When we shift our focus from our own desires to honoring God, we can begin to find true fulfillment and purpose.

Let’s pause for a moment and reflect on our lives. Are we living in a manner that glorifies God? Are we expressing heartfelt gratitude for His blessings? Or are we, like so many others, caught up in the pursuit of worldly pleasures?

Remember, it is only through Christ that we can find redemption and restoration. His perfect life serves as an example for us to follow. Let’s strive to live in grateful obedience, acknowledging God’s authority and seeking His will in everything we do. By doing so, we can break free from the grip of sin and experience the abundant life that God intends for us.
