The Church and Social Media Evangelism: Reaching Souls Online

In today’s rapidly advancing technological era, we find ourselves confronted with a myriad of challenges and temptations. Among these, social media has emerged as a dominant force, capturing the attention and minds of people worldwide.

It has become an integral part of our interconnected world, presenting both incredible opportunities and significant risks. As the influence of social media continues to grow, it is crucial for the church to recognize its impact and consider how it can be effectively utilized to further God’s Kingdom. In this blog post, we will explore the potential of social media within the church setting and discuss how it can be harnessed for positive change.

Living Differently as Christians

Romans 12:2 enlightens us with its wisdom: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

This verse reminds us that as Christians, we are called to live differently from those who do not share our faith. Whatever we do, it should be done to glorify God. Therefore, it seems appropriate to include social media and its utilization within the church setting.

The Bible serves as the cornerstone that shapes our attitudes, principles, and motivations in this regard. After several generations have grown up alongside it, we can no longer ignore or trivialize its impact. Technology consistently triumphs, and it possesses the potential for both great peril and great good. It has become an undeniable fact of life, continuously integrating itself further into our daily routines.

Recognizing the Potential of Technology

In the past, tractors and printing presses faced similar skepticism and disdain. However, they eventually became accepted as indispensable tools. Social media and artificial intelligence will undergo a similar transformation. They are here to stay. Our task then becomes harnessing their power to its fullest potential for the glory of God.

Reasons for Resistance in Churches

Some Christian churches may appear to disregard social media and view it as inherently evil due to a few reasons:

  1. Misunderstanding of social media: Certain churches may not fully grasp how social media works or how it can be harnessed for good. They may perceive it as a mere distraction or a waste of time. Alternatively, concerns may arise regarding the negative aspects of social media, such as cyberbullying or the dissemination of misinformation.
  2. Fear of change: Resistance to change often plagues churches, and social media may be seen as a threat to traditional methods of worship. There may be apprehension about losing control over their message or alienating long-standing members who are resistant to embracing new technologies.
  3. Lack of resources: Some churches may lack the necessary resources to invest in social media, be it time, finances, or expertise. They may lack staff or volunteers who are comfortable with social media platforms, or their budget might not accommodate advertising or marketing expenses.

The Mission Field of Social Media

Undoubtedly, social media has captured the attention and minds of people worldwide. The average daily screen time for individuals globally hovers around seven hours, equating to approximately 24 years of their lives spent staring at screens. This figure will only increase with time.

Never before in history have so many people engaged in the same activity. This vast reach makes it our new mission field — an opportunity for the church that we cannot afford to ignore.

During my recent expedition through remote regions of a communist country, I was astounded to witness phones in almost every hand and a wifi network that rivaled that of America. Social media has penetrated even the most isolated corners of the world. This presents us with an opportunity to shape people’s minds towards God. The gospel message can now reach unprecedented levels of impact.

Harnessing Social Media for Good

Indeed, social media has fundamentally altered the way we learn, communicate, and engage with our neighbors. It is crucial that we infuse Christian reasoning, scripture, and testimonies into these platforms. Undoubtedly, social media exposes individuals to evil, distorts reality, and molds the minds of children. Similar to television’s impact in the past, social media shapes societal norms. Secular thoughts inundate people relentlessly, unfiltered. Our children are particularly vulnerable.

Consider the confusion that permeates truth in today’s world. Everything we see or watch requires fact-checking, yet we remain uncertain if the checkers themselves are presenting the truth. Reality itself becomes questionable for individuals. Deep fakes have reached such an advanced stage that voices and appearances can be replicated to the point where distinguishing truth from fiction becomes nearly impossible.

This erosion of truth coincides with a decline in respect for authority. Boundaries blur, and individual desires take precedence. Consequently, ideas and individuals deserving of respect are devalued in the public eye.

As Christian individuals, called to live our lives with God’s glory in mind, we cannot remain indifferent to this situation. It is time for the average Christian to realize that we possess the greatest story to tell — one of absolute truth. Scripture engages us far more deeply than cat videos or endless pranks.

It is our responsibility to prepare minds for the real world, which harbors genuine problems and an eternal significance that far surpasses the temporary concerns of this physical existence.

Using Social Media Wisely

Social media, in and of itself, cannot be inherently evil. Similarly, any object, regardless of its intended purpose for entertainment or information distribution, cannot be inherently evil. It is a legitimate tool that Christians can employ. Otherwise, we would need to purge ourselves of books, televisions, and magazines.

This falls under the realm of Christian liberty, as we observe in Romans 14. Differences of conscience exist, and the Bible must guide our churches’ utilization of social media.

1 Corinthians 6:12 imparts an important lesson: “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything. You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’ — but not everything is good for you. And even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything.” Yes, even social media is permissible, and we have demonstrated its potential for good. The overarching principle remains that we must use it as a tool rather than allowing it to control us.

Remember, social media can form habits and shape minds in harmful ways, echoing the vices that plagued humanity before the advent of this new technology. It competes for people’s loyalty, ruling over and dominating them.

Let’s utilize it to make people pause and contemplate the implications of their souls and the events that follow death. Let’s leverage it to spread the message of Jesus! We must present reality as it truly is and reveal holiness to individuals who may never encounter it elsewhere.

The Potential Impact of Social Media

About a year ago, I embarked on a personal journey to expand my reach through social media. Little did I know the profound impact it would have. Today, my combined platforms on Twitter, Facebook, and Medium.com boast a following of over seventy thousand individuals.

These are not just numbers; they represent real people from various corners of the world. They actively reach out to me through private messages, seeking guidance, asking questions, and sharing their prayer concerns.

The remarkable part is that achieving this level of influence was relatively straightforward, taking just a short span of time. As I reflect on this experience, I can’t help but imagine the immense potential for churches that invest effort and allocate a portion of their budget to social media outreach. The reach your church could attain is truly awe-inspiring.

Consider the possibilities. By harnessing the power of social media, your church could connect with individuals who may never step foot inside a physical church building. People from all walks of life, from every corner of the globe, could be reached with a message of hope, love, and the transformative power of the gospel. The internet has made geographical barriers practically obsolete, allowing the good news to transcend boundaries and resonate with hearts and minds in unprecedented ways.

Through intentional engagement on social media platforms, your church could become a beacon of light and a source of inspiration for countless individuals. By sharing biblical teachings, uplifting messages, and testimonies of transformed lives, you have the opportunity to reach far beyond the limitations of your local community. The digital realm becomes a fertile mission field, where the seeds of faith can be sown, nurtured, and ultimately bear fruit.

Imagine the impact your church could have on those who are seeking truth, struggling with doubts, or desperately in need of spiritual guidance. With just a few clicks, your message could resonate with someone who is longing for answers, searching for purpose, or feeling lost in the vast sea of information and opinions that social media often presents. The power to make a lasting difference is at your fingertips.

Of course, this endeavor requires effort and resources. But as my own journey has demonstrated, the investment is worth it. When we dedicate ourselves to reaching others through social media, the results can be astounding.

So, I urge you to consider the untapped potential that lies within social media for your church. With a focused strategy, intentional content, and a willingness to engage authentically with others, you can extend your reach far beyond the physical boundaries of your church walls.

The digital landscape is waiting, brimming with opportunities to share the love of Christ and make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals who need it the most.

Embracing the Digital Mission Field

Embrace this new mission field, and witness firsthand the transformative power of social media as a tool for spreading the good news. With a concerted effort and the allocation of resources, your church can unleash a wave of hope, inspiration, and positive change that reaches far and wide, transcending borders and touching lives across the globe.

The time is now to harness the potential of social media and let your church’s voice resonate with the world.

Considerations for Churches

For Christian churches considering the use of social media, a few essential considerations should be kept in mind:

  1. Have a clear purpose: Determine what you hope to achieve through social media. Do you seek to reach a wider audience, foster relationships, or provide support? Once you establish your purpose, you can develop a strategy to attain it.
  2. Be intentional: Do not merely post random content on social media. Take the time to plan your posts and ensure they are relevant to your target audience.
  3. Be authentic: People can easily spot insincerity. Be yourself on social media, allowing your unique personality to shine through.
  4. Be patient: Building a following on social media takes time. Do not expect immediate results, as success requires perseverance.

The Value of Social Media for Churches

If you are willing to invest the time and effort, social media can become a valuable tool for your church. It enables you to reach a broader audience, build relationships, provide support, and educate and inform your members.

  1. Excellent post, Rich. I think embracing social media and plowing the digital mission field requires an openness to leveraging new technologies to advance the Kingdom. I think if the Apostle Paul were living today, he would be the foremost advocate for using whatever tools God provides us to share the Gospel and the need for salvation. Good word. I look forward to reading more.
