Psalm 1: The Blessed Path to True Prosperity

Have you ever wondered what it means to be truly blessed?

The very first word of Psalm 1 is ‘blessed,’ and it beckons us to ponder this question. Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

But what does ‘blessed’ really mean in this context? It’s the recognition that God is always by our side.

No matter your circumstances in life, God’s presence is a constant. There are no conditions to this promise; whether you find yourself in the depths of poverty or the lap of prosperity, God is with you every second, minute, hour, or day. It’s truly a blessing to know that God is with you, no matter what.

You’ve probably met someone in your life who endures unimaginable hardships, be it a debilitating illness, severe mental struggles, or surviving abusive relationships within their family. It’s heart-wrenching.

However, you can tell when God is with them.

Their spirits are enriched by His presence, and they become a blessing to the world because they understand that God blesses them regardless of their circumstances.

They embody the description found in verse 3:

‘He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.’ (Psalm 1:3 NASB).

Isn’t there a more beautiful sight than a healthy, green, fruitful tree?

This person, like the tree, prospers in everything they do. This is a profound promise from God. When we read this, our minds might initially jump to the idea of material wealth and prosperity, but I believe God’s intention is deeper than that. After all, this is God’s book, not the world’s book.

To prosper in God’s eyes means to live life in accordance with spiritual principles. Through obedience, we reflect God. If material wealth is bestowed upon us, we thank Him for it. But as Christians, our test lies in ensuring that these material possessions do not undermine our walk with God.

When God speaks of ‘fruit,’ He is referring to attributes such as peace, joy, patience, gentleness, goodness, self-control, and strength. When these qualities manifest in a person, it’s a testament to a loving God who blesses us through spiritual prosperity.

So, let’s seek to be like that tree by the streams of living water, deeply rooted in God’s presence, and bearing the fruits of His blessings in our lives.
