Romans 15:17–19
Imagine a journey filled with shipwrecks, beatings, and extreme hunger, yet marked by unwavering faith and a relentless drive to spread a message.
This is the journey of the apostle Paul, a man whose life story holds valuable lessons for us all.
In the New Testament world, few figures shine as brightly as Paul. He wasn’t just another preacher; he was a chosen vessel, commissioned by a higher power to carry a message of hope and redemption to the farthest corners of the known world.
“Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God. For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and all around as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ,” (Romans 15:17–19).
In his own words, Paul acknowledges that his accomplishments were not his own doing but the result of divine intervention. He attributes his success in converting Gentiles to the power of God working through him, rather than his own intellect or abilities.
Paul’s life was no walk in the park. He faced countless obstacles, from shipwrecks to beatings, yet he never wavered in his faith. His resilience in the face of adversity serves as an example of the strength that comes from relying on God.
As we reflect on Paul’s life, we are challenged to examine our own beliefs and actions. Are we relying on our own strength, or are we surrendering to a power greater than ourselves?
Paul’s humility and dependence on God serve as a reminder that true strength comes from acknowledging our weaknesses and trusting in something beyond ourselves.
In a world that often glorifies self-promotion and pride, Paul’s example stands out as a standard of humility and grace. His life teaches us that true greatness is found not in our own achievements, but in our willingness to submit to a higher purpose.
So let’s embrace the lessons of Paul’s life, seeking to live with humility, perseverance, and unwavering faith. In doing so, may we too become effective vessels of God, spreading hope and light in a world that is often filled with darkness. Only God can do it. And he does it through Jesus in the gospel.
May he work this in us and unleash a tidal wave of service in our church and in the world.
