The Blueprint for Finding Life’s Purpose

King Solomon, the one the Bible describes as the epitome of wisdom and mastery, asks us to heed his urgent plea: to unravel the essence of existence. In his tireless search for purpose, he wrestled with the deep contrast between wisdom and foolishness.

“As I turned to consider wisdom, insanity, and foolishness; for what will the man do who will come after the king, except what has already been done?” (Ecclesiastes 2:12).

Reflecting on his experience, he unveils the stark contrast between wisdom and folly.

“Then I saw that wisdom surpasses foolishness as light surpasses darkness.” (Ecclesiastes 2:13).

When a wise person walks through life they can see a long ways ahead, they see where they are going, and they chose their path accordingly. The foolish man sort of gropes through life with no clear direction. It’s better to wise than foolish. It’s better to have direction than to merely exist.

In Solomon’s plea, we feel the weight of his words, urging us to grasp the fleeting nature of wisdom’s advantage.

“The wise person’s eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one and the same fate happens to both of them,” (Ecclesiastes 2:14).

But, notice the advantage doesn’t last. Both wise and foolish wind up in the same the place. So, what’s the point of it all? Why even try to attain wisdom if we all end up in the grave? Solomon concludes this section by saying he hates life.

This way of thinking still feels relevant today, even in 2024. The truth is, we’ll all face judgment from a higher power eventually. Solomon says shift your focus from temporal concerns to eternal truths.

While earthly wisdom may indeed seem futile in the face of mortality, living for eternity invites us to consider a higher purpose and a redeeming hope only found in Christ.
