Old age is often seen with dread and regret. Society tells us to hide our wrinkles, dye our gray hairs, and cling to youth as if growing old is something to be ashamed of. But why? We all want to live long lives, yet we fear the natural process of aging.
For a non-Christian, it makes sense. Without faith, old age can seem bleak. The elderly might face their final years with nothing but memories and regrets, haunted by unfulfilled dreams and an uncertain afterlife. The fear of death looms large without the comfort of an everliving God.
But what does the Bible say about age? For a child of God, old age is not a time of regret but a period of glory and honor. Proverbs 4:18 tells us, “But the path of righteousness is like the light of dawn that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.”
Think of life as a day. For most, the sun rises in childhood, reaches its peak in adulthood, and slowly sets as they age, with shadows growing longer. But for the righteous, for the Christian who walks in faith, their life is a dawn that only gets brighter. Their spiritual usefulness and the godliness of their character shine at their brightest at the end of their lives.
Old age for a Christian means looking forward to greater usefulness and a deeper enjoyment of God. It’s not about fading away but about shining ever more brightly. There is no shame in growing old; in fact spiritual usefulness and their Godliness of character reaches its zenith at the end of life.
Embrace your age and use your life as a testament to the light that grows brighter with each passing year. Friends, there is no shame in old age.
