When the Storm Rages and the Savior Sleeps

Mark 4:35–5:20 is a passage brimming with contrasts. Two vivid stories set side by side highlight the power and identity of Jesus in ways that challenge both His disciples and us.

This morning, we journey through this text to uncover its truths, framed by two striking contrasts.

First Contrast: Jesus and the Disciples

Mark 4:35-41

Picture the scene: Jesus, weary from a full day of teaching, rests in the back of the boat as His disciples steer across the calm waters of the Sea of Galilee. Suddenly, without warning, the peace shatters.

A fierce storm arises, waves crash over the sides, and the boat begins to fill with water. Experienced fishermen panic, convinced they are doomed. Yet, Jesus sleeps—unbothered, untouched by their fear.

The disciples’ question cuts to the heart: “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Jesus wakes, speaks, and the chaos obeys:
“Hush, be still.”

The storm stops, replaced by an eerie calm. But the disciples’ terror doesn’t end—it deepens. “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

This moment teaches us two powerful lessons:

  1. Jesus is God in the boat. The One who spoke creation into existence commands nature itself. Psalm 93 comes alive:
“The Lord on high is mighty, more than the sounds of many waters.”
  2. Faith in the storm isn’t optional. Jesus asks, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” His presence is a promise of protection, yet their fear shows they still don’t fully trust Him.

How often do we, like the disciples, find ourselves overwhelmed by life’s storms? In our panic, we may wonder if Jesus cares. The truth is, His power and presence are unshaken—even when we feel like the waves are winning.

Second Contrast: Jesus and the Unbelievers

Mark 5:1-20

The boat reaches the opposite shore, and immediately, chaos meets them again. A man possessed by an unclean spirit, living among tombs, rushes toward Jesus. His chains are broken, his cries pierce the air, and his torment seems unstoppable.

But the contrast here couldn’t be clearer.

This man, dominated by Legion—a vast army of demons—falls before Jesus and begs for mercy. Even the forces of hell know they are no match for the Son of the Most High God.

Jesus speaks again, and the demons flee into a herd of pigs, plunging into the sea. The man, once captive to darkness, is transformed—clothed, calm, and in his right mind.

Yet, the unbelievers react with fear. The townspeople, hearing of the event, beg Jesus to leave their region. What a contrast:

  • The man who was healed longs to follow Jesus.
  • The townspeople, confronted by His power, want Him gone.

This story reminds us:

  1. Jesus’ power transforms lives. No one is too far gone for His mercy.
  2. Unbelief blinds people to the beauty of Christ. Instead of rejoicing, the townspeople reject Him.

A Personal Call to Faith

These two stories—set against the backdrop of storms and deliverance—ask us:

  • Do we trust Jesus in the storm?
  • Do we recognize His power to save?

When life feels out of control, remember this: the One who commands the wind and waves is in the boat with you. And when the world seems hopelessly broken, don’t forget: Jesus is the One who sets captives free.

He calls us, like the healed man, to go and tell others of His mercy and power. The world may fear or reject Him, but our task remains the same:
“Go home to your people and report what great things the Lord has done for you.”

Let’s anchor our faith in the One who never leaves the boat—even when the storm rages.

Conclusion

Mark 4:35–5:20 shows us that Jesus is not just a teacher; He is the Lord over creation and the Savior who transforms lives. These contrasts invite us to see Him for who He truly is: the God who is always in control, always compassionate, and always worthy of our trust.

When the storms come or the darkness looms, may we hear His voice, trust His presence, and proclaim His greatness.
