John 15:7 (NKJV) says:
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

Do you ever feel like your prayers don’t measure up to those of your pastor or spiritually mature friends? Have you been praying for something but have not yet received it?

I am not against pastors or praying partners. Spiritually, we are all one in Christ, and we all have the same Holy Spirit operating within us—complete, perfect, and intact.

Romans 12:3 (KJV) says:
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

If we read carefully, we will notice it says “the measure of faith”—not “a measure.” This reminds us that saving faith is a gift from God, and that each believer receives exactly what they need to live out their calling in Christ. We don’t create faith by our own effort; it is dealt to us by God’s grace.

So, why are some prayers answered while others seem to be delayed?

As I was pondering this, I was led back to John 15:7. Jesus makes it clear that the key is abiding. The people whose prayers seem to be hindered are often those who are not abiding in Him.

To receive from God, we need to abide in Him!

When we don’t abide in Christ, we may open the door to spiritual distractions or doubts, which can hinder our prayers. It’s not that God is unwilling—He is always good—but we may be out of alignment with His will.

For example, you may be praying for a life partner. God’s Word provides clear wisdom about relationships. If we ignore His Word and instead chase worldly trends, we risk missing His best for us. God’s guidelines are not to restrict us, but to protect us.

When we abide in Christ, something beautiful happens: God shapes our desires. If our prayers begin out of alignment with His Word, abiding in Him leads to a change in our heart. He doesn’t force us, but lovingly redirects us as we surrender.

Suppose you’re giving more weight to financial prosperity when choosing a life partner, but God values someone who has a reverent heart toward Him. If you stay close to Him, your desires will start to reflect His priorities. It’s important to say: God is not against financial prosperity, but 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV) warns us clearly:

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Financial blessings are not bad, but if our joy or sense of security depends entirely on them, it’s time to let God’s wisdom refocus our hearts.

We need to understand: God will not compromise His Word to answer our prayers. Instead, He lovingly changes us from the inside out as we abide in Him. It’s not always easy, but it is always good. When we remain in Him, He reshapes our desires to match His—and the fruit is lasting and joyful.

Let us pray:

Father, thank You. I trust You in everything You do for me. You are a good God. As I decide to abide in You, I surrender my desires, and I believe You will shape my heart to desire what brings good and lasting fruit in my life. In Jesus’ mighty and precious name, Amen!
