Malachi 3:16-4:6
Malachi stands with his feet in two worlds. One eye sees Bethlehem. One eye sees the clouds cracking open.
He speaks of the First Coming and the Final One in a single breath. Like staring through a tunnel so long you can’t tell where it ends.
To the faithful, Christ’s arrival is a sunrise.
To the backslider, it’s an inferno.
“The day is coming,” he says, “burning like a furnace. The arrogant and the evildoer will be stubble.”
You can build your life with diplomas and ministries and strategic plans, but if the fire comes and all that’s left is ash, what then?
He will not leave you roots.
He will not leave you branches.
He will not leave you anything to rebuild with.
Because judgment doesn’t ask how loud your worship was.
It asks what your heart bowed to when no one was looking.
And Yet…
A whisper beneath the roar.
Buried in the smoke, a remnant speaks.
They do not raise banners.
They do not trend.
They fear the Lord.
And they speak often with one another.
They gather in kitchens and on porches and behind church buildings that never make the news. They hold Scripture like bread. They weep in prayer without posting about it. They sharpen one another like old knives passed down through generations…worn, but still deadly.
And God leans in.
He writes their names.
With permanence. With purpose. “They shall be mine,” He says. “My special treasure.”
Not just treasure. Personal treasure.
Like the button your grandmother wore at every Christmas.
Like the first fishing lure your father gave you when your hands were too small to cast.
Like the verse you wrote in the front of your Bible the night you actually believed.
The world tramples jewels into the mud.
But God knows where every one of them lies.
And He is coming to gather them.
The Day When the Calves Run Loose
The fire that consumes the wicked heals the faithful.
For them, it is not a furnace. It is dawn.
“The Sun of Righteousness will rise,” Malachi says, “with healing in His wings. And you shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.”
Can you see it?
The door swings open.
The cold floor behind them.
And suddenly they’re running, skipping, tearing across the field.
Because they’ve been waiting.
And the wait is over.
That’s what it will feel like.
The world sees a sky filled with blood.
The remnant sees a sunrise.
The world trembles at fire.
The saints leap through it, laughing, lungs filled with joy.
What Will Be Said of You?
There are two cups.
One is bitter. It leaves the mouth dry and the conscience cracked. It offers distraction instead of peace. It bribes you with comfort and chains you with regret. It’s the cup of the backslider.
The other burns on the way down. But it’s clean. It breaks the fever. It prepares the soul for glory.
And it is offered freely.
Christ has come.
Christ will come again.
And between the manger and the clouds, there is no room to wander.
So plant your feet.
Open the Word.
Live like the sky could split tonight.
And if it does…if it does…
may He find you not with hands in your pockets,
but with eyes lifted,
and the fire of the altar still glowing on your face.
