When I Entered Your Night

A warm, living shaft of golden light descends into a dark, quiet stable, illuminating the straw-covered floor with a soft, breathing radiance.

A Christmas Devotion from John 1:1–18

I remember the first sound your world ever knew.
It rose where nothing had shape,
where silence waited without breath,
where darkness lay unbroken and unnamed.

I spoke,
and My word moved through the void like a warm wind brushing a still lake.
Light gathered to Me as if it had been longing for a name.
Colors stirred.
Waters trembled.
The first morning stretched its limbs and blinked awake beneath My gaze.

Everything living leaned toward Me.
Rivers held My reflection.
Stars carried My spark.
What moved and breathed could do so only because I had placed My life within it.

But the world grew used to the shadows.
My voice, once so clear, became a soft memory in human minds.
They mistook the dimness for safety,
the silence for peace.
The night wrapped itself around them like a familiar blanket,
and they forgot that they were made for brightness.

I could have spoken again from the heights,
but My heart turned toward a deeper path.
I chose to step into the shadows they called normal.

And so I entered a virgin’s womb.
Small as a seed.
Quiet as breath before it forms a word.
Her heartbeat warmed Me.
Her blood carried what I would need to grow.
My radiance folded itself into her frame without losing its fire.

She felt the quickening beneath her ribs,
and I felt her wonder wash over Me like a tide returning to shore.

Joseph dreamed of Me before he met Me.
Even his uncertainty carried kindness.
In his sleep, he heard My reassurance and held it close.
His hands, rough from labor, trembled when he touched her shoulder,
but his heart steadied for the journey I placed before him.

When her labor pains came,
I felt each one as a tightening of the world I was entering.
The stable’s breath was warm with animals,
and the straw whispered against her garments as Joseph cleared a place for her.

Then My time arrived.
Light entering the narrow gate of human birth.
My cry touched the air I once created.
Cold rushed against My skin.
The night gathered around Me,
curious, unsure of what to do with the One it had tried to imitate for so long.

Mary held Me against her chest.
Her hands shook.
I felt her tears drop onto My forehead like tiny warm stars.
Joseph hovered close,
careful, aware that the child in his arms carried eternity beneath fragile ribs.

The shepherds felt My nearness before they saw it.
Their fire dwindled low,
their sheep huddled in soft mounds against the dark.
Then My messenger stepped into their night,
and the sky breathed gold.

Their fear rose sharp and sudden.
Their hearts thudded like hooves in a hollow valley.
But My words calmed them through Gabriel’s voice.
A Savior.
Born here.
Born now.

When the song of the hosts thundered across the fields,
the shepherds felt their smallness and their worth in the same moment.
They ran until their lungs burned,
and their rough hands trembled when they found Me lying where cattle fed.

They did not understand what had unfolded,
but their souls leaned toward Me the way flowers turn toward warmth.
Even their silence became worship.

Simeon waited his whole life for Me.
I guided his steps that morning,
the temple stones warm beneath his sandals.
When he saw Me in Mary’s arms,
his breath caught like a man hearing his name spoken by a long-lost friend.

He lifted Me,
and the years on his shoulders felt suddenly light.
He whispered to Me as one speaks to a child and a King at the same time.
His blessing rested on Mary,
and the sorrow he foretold touched her spirit with a quiet chill,
though she held Me closer instead of pulling away.

Anna saw Me and her heart rose like dawn inside her chest.
Her prayers had shaped the very air she lived in.
Her face, lined with years of waiting, softened when she recognized what others missed.
She moved through the temple like a herald,
telling those who hungered for redemption that their hunger had found its home.

From distant lands,
wise men followed the trace of My radiance stitched into the sky.
Their journey long,
their hearts stirred by a promise older than their kingdoms.
When they entered the house and saw Me,
their knees bent before their minds could reason why.
Gold for a King.
Incense for the One who brings them near.
Myrrh for the road that would ask for My life.

But another king trembled at My arrival.
Fear hollowed Herod’s heart.
His cruelty spread like smoke.
Mothers wept in Bethlehem,
their cries rising like broken incense.
I carried each life taken by his order.
Not one tear fell unnoticed.

Joseph obeyed My whisper again,
and together we fled into the land where My people had once been slaves.
Egypt sheltered Me until the danger passed,
its winds carrying unfamiliar scents,
its nights filled with echoes of stories I knew by heart.

When we returned to Nazareth,
My childhood unfolded in quietness.
Wood dust gathered on My clothes.
The grain of cedar pressed its memory into My palms.
I grew,
feeling the stretch of limbs and the weight of time,
waiting for the moment the world would see the Light it had forgotten.

And now I speak to you.

These words rest before you like a candle cupped in your hands.
Not story for story’s sake,
but the truth of how I stepped into your night.

I took on your frame
so you could behold the God who once breathed life into you
standing within reach of your trembling heart.

I walked roads you still walk.
I let sorrow brush against Me.
I tasted the hunger your soul knows too well.
I entered every corner of your dimness
so the radiance I carry could break it open from within.

Some still turn their faces away.
Some pretend not to notice the glow.
Some lift their eyes and find that I have been watching them with patience older than time.

Hear Me:
I shine.
The darkness cannot swallow Me.
Not then.
Not now.
Not ever.

And I stand at the threshold of your thoughts,
nearer than breath,
quiet,
waiting for you to look toward Me.

Take one step in My direction,
and you will discover
I have already taken every step toward you.
