Job 31:1–4
Job’s plea to God unveils a remarkable glimpse into the essence of his life. In Chapter 31, we witness the tangible manifestation of godliness in action, revealing the deep connection Job shared with God.
But one thing is abundantly clear: Job was no ordinary humanist. This was no mere moralistic religion he adhered to. The motivation behind this exhaustive list lay in Job’s intimate knowledge of God.
With conviction and unwavering commitment, Job commences his discourse: “I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look at a virgin? And what is the portion of God from above, or the inheritance of the Almighty from on high? Is it not disaster to the criminal, and misfortune to those who practice injustice? Does He not see my ways, and count all my steps?” (Job 31:1–4).
Do you grasp the weight of these words? A true follower of Christ knows God and lives before Him. Job boldly declares that not even a hint of impurity tainted his life, especially when it came to the grip of lust. His commitment to purity was sealed in a covenant with the Almighty — a sacred pact governing his every glance.
In a world plagued by pop-up ads, garish advertising, and the sinister allure of readily accessible pornography, this particular sin has become a rampant epidemic in our time. Yet, scripture imparts a timeless truth: the sanctity of our hearts hinges on the discipline of our eyes. Control over one’s gaze becomes the defining characteristic of a person who walks in godliness.
Are your eyes wandering aimlessly, enticed by fleeting pleasures? Do you find yourself ensnared in the web of temptation, succumbing to the allure of a single click?
Be reminded that true godliness necessitates discipline. It demands an intentional redirection of our attention, a resolute commitment to fix our gaze upon what is noble, pure, and virtuous. Only then can our hearts remain untainted, our souls anchored in righteousness.
