Weighing the Path of Deception

Job 31:5–8

Previously, in Job’s remarkable journey we witnessed Job’s unwavering commitment to the discipline of the eyes — a defining feature of a godly person. And now, Job unveils yet another facet of his remarkable character: a life lived with utmost caution.

Listen closely to Job’s words: “If I have walked with deception, and my foot has hurried after deceit, Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, and let God know my integrity. If my step has turned from the way, Or my heart followed my eyes, or if any spot has stuck to my hands, let me sow and another eat, and let my crops be uprooted” (Job 31:5–8).

Can you fathom the weight of Job’s discernment? Every decision he made underwent a rigorous evaluation. If a path seemed steeped in deceit, he would swiftly avert his steps.

Job possessed the wisdom to turn away his gaze if he sensed the lure of lust creeping into his heart. He deliberately chose to abstain from any form of sin.

Indeed, godliness extends far beyond the boundaries of obvious transgressions. It abstains from even the faintest hint of evil. This is why a godly person treads with holy caution.

A Christian meticulously weighs every situation, discerning its moral standing and its alignment with the desires of God. The will is governed by a higher purpose — a purpose that ensures actions are rooted in righteousness.
