Romans 1:3–4: Jesus at the Heart of the Gospel
What is the true essence of the gospel? Is it merely a man-made invention, or is it a divine revelation that transcends human understanding? These are questions that every believer must grapple with, and the book of Romans offers profound answers.
Paul begins his monumental letter to the Romans by introducing the gospel as “the gospel of God,” emphasizing its divine origin. This isn’t a story crafted by human imagination—it is God’s good news, revealed through His Word. At the very center of this gospel stands Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection define the message we proclaim.
Romans 1:3–4 beautifully encapsulates the heart of this gospel:
“Concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness—Jesus Christ our Lord.”
These two verses reveal three critical truths about the gospel: its divine source, its focus on Jesus Christ, and its ultimate proof in His resurrection. Let’s explore these truths and their significance for our lives today.
1. The Gospel’s Divine Source
Paul calls this message the “gospel of God,” immediately reminding us that it originates with the Creator of the universe. This is not a cultural myth or a philosophical idea but a message rooted in the eternal purposes of God.
Throughout history, humanity has often tried to shape religion according to its own desires, creating gods in its image. But the gospel defies such efforts. It is God’s message to humanity, revealed through the sacred Scriptures. This divine origin gives the gospel its authority and power.
For Christians, this means we can trust the gospel completely. It’s not a fleeting human idea, but the eternal truth of a holy God.
2. Jesus: Both David’s Descendant and David’s Lord
Paul introduces Jesus as the central figure of the gospel, describing Him first as “born of a descendant of David according to the flesh.” This emphasizes Jesus’ humanity and His rightful place in the lineage of King David.
The Old Testament is filled with prophecies about a coming Messiah who would descend from David’s line (2 Samuel 7:12-13; Isaiah 11:1). By being born into this lineage, Jesus fulfilled these ancient promises, establishing His identity as the rightful King of Israel.
But Jesus is far more than David’s descendant—He is David’s Lord (Matthew 22:41–46). While His human lineage connects Him to the promises of Israel, His divine nature sets Him apart. Jesus Christ is both fully man and fully God, a truth that forms the foundation of Christian belief.
For us, this means Jesus is relatable in His humanity and worthy of worship in His divinity. He understands our struggles because He walked among us, yet He reigns above us as King.
3. The Resurrection: A Declaration of Divinity
If Jesus’ humanity is affirmed by His lineage, His divinity is declared through His resurrection. Paul writes that Jesus was “declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness.”
The resurrection is not just an extraordinary event—it’s the cornerstone of our faith. It is God’s ultimate declaration that Jesus is His Son, possessing power and authority over sin, death, and the grave.
In the resurrection, we see the Spirit of holiness at work, vindicating Jesus’ divine identity. While the world saw Him as a carpenter, teacher, and even a blasphemer, God proclaimed Him to be the Son of God with power.
For believers, the resurrection is more than a historical fact; it’s a life-transforming reality. Because Jesus lives, we have hope, victory, and the promise of eternal life.
Practical Application: What Does This Mean for Us?
As we reflect on Romans 1:3–4, we’re reminded that the gospel is all about Jesus. He is the central figure, the anchor of our faith, and the hope of our salvation. Here are three ways this truth can impact our daily lives:
- Trust in the Gospel’s Power
The gospel is not a weak or outdated message—it’s the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). When we share the gospel with others, we can do so boldly, knowing it carries divine authority. - Worship Jesus as Lord and King
Jesus is both our Savior and our Lord. Let’s live in a way that honors His kingship, submitting every area of our lives to His rule. - Live in Resurrection Power
Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too can walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). His resurrection empowers us to overcome sin and live for God’s glory.
A Gospel-Centered Life
As we immerse ourselves in the gospel of Romans, we are invited to fix our gaze on Jesus Christ. In Him, we find the perfect combination of humanity and divinity, humility and glory. He is the focal point of God’s message to the world and the only path to salvation.
The question for us is simple: Are we living with Jesus at the center? Do we see Him for who He truly is—the Son of God, our Savior, and our Lord?
