Romans 3:27–28
Is there room for boasting in the gospel? Is there space for self-congratulations?
Let me share with you the essence of the good news. The gospel teaches us that true hope for sinners lies solely in Jesus, the Savior who is both fully God and fully man. When we cast ourselves upon Him, we find redemption.
But let’s look into the implications of this truth. The gospel leaves no room for boasting, no place for self-congratulations.
“Where then is boasting? It has been excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the Law,” (Romans 3:27–28).
Consider this question: Where then is boasting? According to Romans 3:27–28, boasting has been excluded, not by the law of works, but by the law of faith.
Our righteousness is not something we achieve on our own; rather, it is a gift of faith that is justified and given to us. Salvation cannot be earned, and no one will enter heaven claiming they deserved it.
In fact, if you encounter someone who is constantly patting themselves on the back, you are likely encountering a person without a true connection to God.
The hallmark of a genuine Christian is humility, recognizing that we have nothing to boast about. We should all be humbled by our poor state and come to the Savior with shame, acknowledging that everything we have is owed to Him. Does this resonate with you?
The gospel of Jesus Christ reminds us that there is no room for self-congratulations. Instead, it calls us to embrace humility and recognize our need for the Savior. Let us cast ourselves upon Him and find hope in His grace and mercy.
