Romans 4:1–2
Have you ever wondered about our place in the eyes of God? It’s clear that we are not without fault, but are we left with no hope for redemption?
Let’s explore the concept of justification, a powerful act of God’s grace that can lead us to acceptance in His eyes. Faith plays a crucial role in this journey, as we learn to take God at His word and trust in His promises.
So, let’s look into the wisdom of the Scriptures to understand how the great figure of Abraham helps us see the truth behind justification.
In the past, Paul preached about justification, but not everyone was pleased with this message. Some, particularly the Jewish community, took offense and persecuted him, much like they did with Jesus.
They believed in the importance of circumcision, law adherence, and segregation as the way to salvation.
However, Paul was quick to counter these objections by referring to the Old Testament and focusing on the figure of Abraham, whom the Jews esteemed highly.
He emphasized that even Abraham, the revered forefather, was saved by justification through faith in the Savior, even before he walked the earth as a man.
“But what did Abraham find?” Paul asked in Romans 4:1–2. “If he was justified by works, he could boast, but not before God. Instead, the Scripture says, ‘ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.’”
Imagine if a works-based religion were the path to salvation; Abraham would have had an excellent chance. However, the Scripture doesn’t advocate this approach.
What truly mattered was Abraham’s faith. He believed in God’s promises and took Him at His word. As a result, God recognized his faith and credited it to him as righteousness. Nothing was earned through works; it was all about trust and belief.
In the same way, we too can embrace God’s grace and find justification through faith. It’s not about achieving perfection through strict adherence to laws and rituals, but rather, it’s about surrendering to God’s promises and having faith in His redemptive power.
So, let’s rejoice in the free forgiveness offered to us through God’s grace. Embrace faith and trust in His word, just as Abraham did. In doing so, we can find acceptance and righteousness in the eyes of God.
