As Christians, we have certain marks that distinguish us from the rest of the world.
Seeking truth in God’s word, loving our fellow Christians, and living in obedience to God are the benchmarks that let us know that we are of the truth. And when we have these marks, we can rest easy, knowing that our salvation is assured.
“We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him, that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things,” (1 John 3:19–20).
These verses tell us that we will know we are of the truth and can set our hearts at ease before God. But sometimes, even as Christians, we can still experience doubts and fears.
Our hearts may condemn us, and we may wonder if we are truly saved. It’s a natural feeling, and I think every Christian has gone through it at some point.
But here’s the thing: when these doubts come, we need to turn to the evidences given to us in Scripture. We need to examine our lives and see if we have the fruits of the Spirit.
Are we seeking truth in God’s word? Are we loving our fellow Christians? Are we living in obedience to God? If we can answer yes to these questions, then we can have peace in our hearts.
As you journey through life as a Christian, always remember that your conscious, feelings, and heart are not infallible. They are capable of being swayed and deceived.
But fear not, for God is greater than all of that! When your heart is on trial, and doubts creep in, look to Him.
He judges our thoughts and motives and sees the beauty of our desire to obey and love others. He is greater than any accuser, and He does not listen to their accusations.
The verdict is in: You are a true child of God. His grace is sufficient for you. As you reflect on the kindness of our Creator, may your heart be filled with joy, peace, and assurance of your salvation.
