Medium is a dynamic platform where writers from all walks of life share their stories, thoughts, and expertise. Spend any time on it, and you might notice a strong left-leaning presence. This raises an important question: Is it worth it for a Christian to write on Medium?
The Power of Presence on a Secular Platform
Medium, launched in August 2012, is described as a blend of social journalism, combining the voices of amateur and professional writers alike. It’s a place where exclusive blogs, publishers, and individual voices converge. For a Christian writer, Medium can feel like stepping into a vast echo chamber filled with secular thought. But does that mean we should shy away from it?
When I started my journey on Medium two years ago, I was committed to one thing: sharing the gospel. I decided to use this platform to publish prayers, book reviews, and verse-by-verse Bible studies. The temptation to conform to the platform’s more secular tones was there, but I believed then—as I do now—that Christian content needs to be present in every corner of the internet.
Staying True to the Message
Initially, my experience on Medium was slow and challenging. Like many, I believed that joining popular publications on the platform would boost my visibility. While this did bring some early attention to my work, it came at a cost. Many of these publications were only willing to accept my pieces if I watered down my message. They wanted Christian content, but not the full weight of evangelical thought.
For a time, I played along, rewriting articles to fit their guidelines. But eventually, I grew tired of compromising my message. That’s when I decided to publish directly under my profile, without relying on the safety net of established publications.
Building an Audience, One Post at a Time
At first, my stories barely got any traction—five views on a good day, with an occasional spike to twenty views if an article happened to resonate more. It was discouraging at times, but I was resolved to publish nearly every day, knowing that persistence was key.
Gradually, my audience began to grow. The more I wrote, the more I noticed readers coming back. However, I also realized that my growth could have been faster if I had engaged more with the community—reading other articles, commenting, and building relationships. Every guru on Medium will tell you that interaction is crucial for growth, and they’re right. It’s something I still need to work on.
Here’s a glimpse into my stats from this week:

Persistence and hard work have paid off, but I believe there’s still so much room for growth as I continue to write and engage more deeply with the community.

The Medium Landscape for Christian Writers
Medium estimates that there are around 30,000 Christian writers on the platform. That’s a substantial number, yet it often feels like Christian content doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There’s a silent, yet significant, audience out there that is hungry for the gospel—they just need to find us.
One of the elusive goals on Medium is to have your story “boosted” by the platform’s editors. A boosted story can easily rack up 100,000 views or more. Despite my consistency and the quality of my content, I have yet to see any of my stories boosted, and I haven’t come across any conservative Christian articles that have been either. It’s clear that certain types of content don’t align with the platform’s criteria for boosting, but that’s okay.
Why Christian Voices Matter on Medium
To any Christian writer wondering if it’s worth it to stick it out on Medium, I say this: Yes, it absolutely is. There’s value in being present, in having our voices heard, and in contributing to the dialogue happening on this platform. I have my own blog, and I publish on Medium as well. Each platform offers unique opportunities to spread the gospel message.
Writing about Christ brings me joy, and the thought that someone, somewhere—perhaps someone who hasn’t thought about God in years—might stumble upon one of my stories and begin to reflect on eternity is incredibly fulfilling. This is good work that we do, and it’s worth every effort.
Engage, Persist, and Share the Gospel
If you’re a Christian writer on Medium, here are a few tips to help you succeed:
- Stay Consistent: Keep publishing, even when it feels like no one is reading. Your audience will grow over time.
- Engage with the Community: Take time to read other articles, leave thoughtful comments, and build relationships. It can help you gain visibility and make your presence known.
- Be True to Your Message: Don’t compromise your message to fit into someone else’s box. There’s power in authenticity.
- Share Your Work Beyond Medium: Use social media and other platforms to share your articles. The more places your work appears, the more people it will reach.
The Work Continues
Medium might not be the easiest place for a Christian writer, but that’s all the more reason to be here. We’re called to be lights in the darkness, and sometimes that means standing firm in a place where our voices might not be the loudest—but they are still heard.
Be encouraged. Keep writing, keep sharing the gospel, and trust that God is using your words to touch lives in ways you may never see.

Thanks Pastor Rich. I’ve been thinking of writing gospel-centred articles on medium and this information is helpful.
