The coffee is still warm.
The kids are still asleep.
And the sermon’s not done.
Saturday morning.
In my younger years, I used to race through it—treat it like a staging area for Sunday. Bullet points. Outlines. Wardrobe check. Performance prep.
But not anymore.
Now, I see it for what it is:
A quiet, sacred hush between the noise of the week and the holy roar of Sunday.
A soft landing place for a weary heart.
I woke up this morning with a half-prayer on my lips and yesterday’s burdens still clinging to my chest.
And I didn’t try to finish the prayer.
I just sat.
The silence said enough.
This isn’t a productivity day.
This is porch-sitting day.
This is breathing-before-speaking day.
This is remembering that before I preach the Word, I must be held by it.
So here’s the prayer I prayed this morning. Not polished. Not rehearsed.
Just real.
And maybe you need it, too.
A Saturday Morning Prayer for the Worn-Out Soul
Lord,
Before I ask for anything, thank You for this morning.
Thank You for the sunlight that slid through my blinds like a slow whisper.
Thank You for the quiet clink of the coffee mug and the stillness of this house.
Thank You that I woke up—not just to another task, but to another chance.
God, You know what this week held.
You saw the texts I didn’t know how to answer.
You heard the tears behind the closed doors.
You watched me carry burdens I didn’t dare name out loud.
And yet You didn’t flinch.
So this morning, I hand them to You—not because I’m strong enough to let go, but because I’m tired enough to stop pretending I can hold them.
As Sunday draws near, I feel the gravity of holy things—Your people, Your Word, Your presence.
But this morning, let me simply be a man with a Bible, not yet a preacher with a pulpit.
Let me be a husband who listens.
A father who laughs.
A child who rests.
Don’t let me miss the sacred in the ordinary. The ministry in the moments.
Let the kitchen table become an altar. The coffee steam become incense.
Let the whole house become a sanctuary.
And Lord—before the bulletin is printed and the mic is clipped and the lights come on—
let me worship here, in the silence.
Let this be my offering:
A still soul. A grateful heart. A whispered amen that nobody hears but You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
This Is Why Saturday Mornings Matter
If Sunday is the crescendo, Saturday is the stillness between the notes.
And if we rush past it, we’ll enter the sanctuary half-full and already spent.
There’s a reason God made rest before the workweek ever began. In Genesis, evening came before morning. Stillness before striving.
He’s been teaching us the rhythm of grace since page one.
Saturday mornings teach me that I’m not the savior.
That the church can wait.
That my family matters more than the perfect sermon transition.
And that God is already moving—before I ever open my mouth.
Where God Speaks the Loudest
Sometimes He speaks through thunder.
But sometimes—maybe most times—He waits until you’re sitting on a porch,
barefoot, holding a half-read Bible and a heart too tired to pretend.
It’s in that place—unpolished, unfinished, unguarded—
that I hear Him say the same thing again and again:
“I’m here. You’re Mine. Rest.”
Want to Make the Most of Your Saturday? Try This.
- Don’t start with your to-do list. Start with thank You
- Sit with a Psalm and let it sit with you. Try Psalm 23. Or 46. Or 131.
- Hold your spouse’s hand for no reason.
- Send one text to someone just to say, “You’re on my heart.”
- Ask God what He wants to say before you speak another word.
You’ll be surprised how holy the day becomes.
One Final Whisper Before Sunday
You might still have a sermon to finish. Groceries to buy. Laundry to fold.
But for this moment, right now, you don’t need to be “on.”
You just need to be His.
So take a breath.
The pulpit can wait.
But your soul cannot.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Help me not to rush.
Help me not to miss You in the quiet.
Let this day feel lighter than the week before it.
Help me hold my family close.
Hold my schedule loosely.
And hold fast to Your Word.
Prepare me for tomorrow.
But meet me here, today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

As a retired missionary (do missionaries ever really retire?) and pastor of a tiny church (after my pastor husband left this world for the next, and there was no one to replace him), and a bible school student, I have enjoyed many of these materials you recommend.
I had not seen that prayer journal. Very nice!
I pondered quite a while about keeping a Sabbath Saturday, not legalistically, but for my own good and I did make a start. I enjoyed it, but did not keep it up. I have not been well since March this year and still trying to recover.
Thank you for the reminder for next Saturday! I already focused today on things that needed done, and did them. Prrhaps I will particpate for the rest of my busy day with home care coming and going. It gets BUSY!!!!
I need a powerful prayer, because in my place of work, I have a lot of enemies. They always see me as threat to them. A threat I mean is to over take them. So in their mind, they do all they could do for me to be under them every now and then. Which that is not what God destined for me.
You are not alone in it as a child of the Living God. Your Father in heaven is with you. I will share two scriptures I recall when in need.
Psalm 7:16 “I will GO in the strength of the Lord God”
Isaiah 30:15b “…….In quietness and confidence shall be my strength”
God’s plans for you will not be thwarted as you put your confidence in Him.
Father, I pray your protection over your servant as he walks in Your will and Your ways, despite the opposition around Him, comfort for any anxiety in his mind, an attitude of gratitude in the face of any antagonism, and a deep understanding of the spiritual battle he faces
Thank You Father for all that You do and how You bless us. May all be done according to Your perfect will, and in the name of Jesus I pray, amen!
